South American Breakfast

South American breakfast, desayuno in Spanish, cafe da manha in Portuguese, tends to be light and quick, following the continental European style. Across the continent, the morning meal is often just a cup of coffee with hot milk and a piece of bread or pastry. But within this simple framework, each country adds its own distinctive flavours.
Cafe con Leche and Medialunas
In Argentina, breakfast is nearly synonymous with cafe con leche (coffee with milk) and medialunas, small, buttery croissants that come in both sweet and plain varieties. Argentines order cafe con leche only in the mornings; by the afternoon, those who want coffee with milk switch to cortados, which contain less milk. Another Argentine breakfast beverage is the submarino: a glass of steamed milk with a bittersweet chocolate bar melted into it.
In Brazil, the morning begins with strong coffee (cafe com leite) accompanied by pao de queijo (cheese bread made from cassava flour), pao frances (French rolls with butter), or tapioca crepes filled with cheese or coconut. Fresh fruit is abundant: papaya, mango, banana, and the vitamin C-rich acai berry, often blended into a smoothie bowl topped with granola.
Pan Dulce and Saltenas
Across the continent, pan dulce (sweet bread) is a breakfast staple, ranging from simple buttered rolls to elaborate sweet buns. In Bolivia, the light early breakfast is often followed by a mid-morning snack called saltenas, small, oval pastries filled with a juicy mixture of meats, peas, potatoes, chopped hard-boiled eggs, raisins, and olives. In Chile and Peru, breakfast might include humitas (savoury corn cakes) or sopaipillas (fried pumpkin bread).
Tea and yerba mate, a caffeine-rich herbal infusion drunk from a gourd through a metal straw, are popular alternatives to coffee, particularly in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The South American breakfast is light but leisurely, a social moment before the day begins. It stands apart from the generous buffet of Israeli Breakfast and shares the continental lightness seen in Spanish Breakfast, where coffee and bread also reign supreme. Find all breakfast articles.
